Juniors Sport

At Crosfields, sport is an integral part of school life, encouraging physical fitness, teamwork, resilience and a lifelong love of being active. Our Junior pupils in Years 3 to 6 enjoy a dynamic and inclusive sports programme supported by specialist teaching and excellent facilities.

A broad and inclusive sports curriculum

From Year 3, pupils take part in a varied PE curriculum that includes a weekly PE lesson, swimming session and extended Games sessions, culminating in competitive fixtures against other schools. Core sports include football, hockey, Rugby, Netball and Cricket, with additional opportunities in cross-country, basketball, badminton, tennis and athletics.

Every child is encouraged to participate, and team selection is based on merit, effort and progress, ensuring fairness and opportunities for all. Parents are warmly invited to support both home and away matches.

Co-Educational Sport in Years 3 and 4

In Years 3 and 4, pupils take part in co-educational sport during Games lessons and fixtures. This approach encourages collaboration, mutual respect and equal opportunities for boys and girls at this important developmental stage.

The linked Y3–Y4 Co-Ed Sport document reinforces these values, highlighting key benefits:

  • Enhanced skill development: Mixed gender teams expose pupils to varied playing styles and strategies.
  • Breaking down gender stereotypes: Boys and girls play, train and compete together, fostering equality on and off the field.
  • Teamwork and collaboration: Co ed formats build unity, communication and confidence.

Fixtures follow a varied seasonal programme, including Football, Hockey, Rugby, Netball and Cricket, ensuring a rich and engaging experience throughout the year.

Progression Through the Junior Years

As pupils move into Year 5 and Year 6, Games lessons transition to single sex groups due to pitch size requirements and the increasing physical demands of some sports. However, coeducational cricket continues to bring pupils together during the summer term.

Across all year groups, specialist PE, Games and Swimming teachers provide high quality coaching and support, helping pupils develop confidence, technique and a healthy competitive spirit.

Developing Character, Confidence and Enjoyment

The Junior Sports Programme is designed not only to build physical skills but to nurture camaraderie, resilience and pride. Through high quality lessons, inclusive team selection and inspiring competitive opportunities, pupils gain the foundations for active, healthy lifestyles and a positive approach to sport that will stay with them for life.
